Opening night: The Thinking Game
Directed by Greg Kohs, produced by Gary Krieg
84 minutes, EN ST FR
Join us for The Thinking Game (2024) — a captivating dive into DeepMind, the pioneering AI lab behind AlphaFold, and the future of artificial intelligence.
The Thinking Game, opening film of CineGlobe 2025, offers an immersive journey inside one of the world’s most influential AI labs: DeepMind. Shot over five years, this documentary follows Demis Hassabis, co-founder of DeepMind, in his bold pursuit of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).
From groundbreaking achievements like AlphaFold—which revolutionised protein structure prediction—to the ethical and scientific dilemmas of advanced AI, the film provides rare insight into one of the most significant scientific quests of our time.
The screening will be followed by a discussion (in English) on the technological, political and ethical questions raised by the film. The discussion will be moderated by the festival director, Neal Hartman, with :
- Sofia Vallecorsa – researcher in the fields of Scientific Computing, Machine Learning and Quantum Computing with applications in High Energy Physics at CERN. PhD in Physics, she has expertise in Machine Learning and Deep Learning. Currently, she focuses on the intersection between AI and Quantum Computing. She is the coordinator of the CERN Quantum Technology Initiative, and leads the Computing and Data Science section in the IT Department at CERN.
- Maurizio Pierini – CERN physicist working on the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). At present, he is working on developing AI solutions for CMS. In particular, he is dreaming of an AI algorithm that could identify previously unseen phenomena as anomalies in the collected data, which could change the way we understand how the universe works.
- Mohanty Sharada – CEO and Founder @ AICrowd, a platform for crown-sourcing machine learning solutions to a variety of real-world problems. At the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland, he worked on problems in Artificial Intelligence from image-based detection of plant diseases to teaching simulated musculo-skeletal models how to walk. Previously, he worked at the Theoretical Physics department at CERN.
